Mason’s Grandmother is a strong, faith-based woman who becomes something of a surrogate mother to Mason following the traumatizing events that took place in Serbia. She does her best to mitigate Mason’s depression, but the grief over the loss of her son, Mason’s father, is overwhelming. She encourages young Mason to not focus on the things he can’t change, but only on the things he can.
