The Sands International Film Festival 2026 marked another successful chapter for St. Andrews.

Now in its fifth year, the festival continues to define itself as a thoughtfully curated space. One that balances emerging voices with established industry perspectives, all within an intimate and highly engaged setting.

Across several days, Sands delivered a program that emphasized both discovery and dialogue, with screenings, conversations, and live events that felt purposeful rather than performative.

A CITADEL FIRST LOOK—ONLY AT SANDS

A standout moment came with a special onstage conversation featuring Angela Russo-Otstot, Joe Russo, and Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. The discussion offered insight into AGBO’s evolving approach to large-scale storytelling, with a particular focus on Citadel Season 2.

Following the panel, attendees were given an exclusive, in-room screening of Episode 1—a rare first look at the new season. Presented without devices or external distribution, the screening underscored the value of the shared, in-person experience that festivals like Sands are uniquely positioned to offer.

A PROGRAM BUILT FOR DISCOVERY

Beyond headline moments, Sands 2026 delivered a well-rounded and ambitious program:

  • Opening night featured an early screening of Power Ballad, starring Nick Jonas & Paul Rudd
  • Composer Craig Armstrong led a live discussion and performance, exploring the role of music in film
  • Industry voices including Charlie Kaufman, Laura Mulvey, and producer John Sloss contributed to a series of conversations that added depth and perspective
  • A curated lineup of international features, including The North, Two Women, and closing film Cactus Pears, reinforced the festival’s commitment to global storytelling

This year also saw the festival expand its footprint within St. Andrews, incorporating additional venues and further integrating the local community into the experience which resulted in a 50% increase in box office sales, signaling rising demand and a growing audience for what Sands is building.

WHY SANDS CONTINUES TO GROW

What distinguishes Sands is not scale, but clarity of purpose. The festival prioritizes meaningful interaction—between filmmakers, audiences, and industry leaders—creating an environment where conversations feel direct and accessible.

It’s a space where emerging talent and established creatives coexist without hierarchy, and where the emphasis remains on the work itself.
